Matadero River

The Matadero River is formed at the confluence of the Tomebamba and Machángara rivers in downtown Cuenca. It flows toward the Paute River as part of the Amazon basin. Travelers visit the riverbanks to walk along the water and observe the city's layout and atmosphere.

Getting There

The river is located within the city center of Cuenca. Because it runs through the downtown area, it is accessible by foot from most central hotels and plazas. Depending on your starting point in the center, it takes only a few minutes to reach the banks.

Time to Spend

Allow one to two hours for a leisurely walk along the riverbanks. This provides enough time to observe the confluence of the rivers and the surrounding urban landscape.

When to Visit

The riverbanks are accessible throughout the year. Visiting during the morning or late afternoon avoids the midday sun. Like other central areas of Cuenca, the paths can become more crowded during weekends and local holidays.

Nearby Attractions

The river is centrally located, making it easy to combine with other nearby water features and landmarks:

  • Cuenca River: 0km
  • Tomebamba River: 0.6km
  • Yanuncay River: 4.7km
  • Church San Blas: 5.5km
