Han River Bridge

Han River Bridge

Hàn River bridge is a cable-stayed swing bridge in downtown Da Nang, Vietnam. Prior to the construction of the bridge, Da Nang was developed mainly on the west side of the Hàn River, and traditional fishing villages and beaches were to the east. Decades after the opening of the bridge, Danang city has developed on both sides of the Han River. The bridge is the first Vietnamese-engineered and Vietnamese-built bridge in the city, the only swing bridge operating in Vietnam, and the first of several 21st-century bridges crossing Danang's Han River and facilitating economic development on both bank...

Han River Bridge

This is a swing bridge across the Hàn River in central Da Nang — the design lets a central section rotate to let boat traffic through, a feature no other bridge in Vietnam has. It was also the first bridge in the city built entirely by Vietnamese engineers, and its opening in the late 1990s opened up the east bank of the river to development. The appeal for a visitor is mostly about atmosphere: standing on or near the bridge in the evening, watching the swing mechanism operate, and taking in the skyline along both riverbanks lit up at night.

Getting there

The bridge sits in the middle of Da Nang, close to the city centre on the west bank. From most hotels along Bach Dang Street or in the central district, it's a walk of 10-15 minutes, or a few minutes by taxi or ride-hailing scooter.

How long to stay

Twenty to thirty minutes is enough to walk across, watch the river, and take photos. If you time it for the swing operation, allow a bit longer to wait and watch.

When to go

Evening is the main draw, when the bridge and riverside buildings are lit up and the swing mechanism typically operates, drawing a steady crowd of locals and visitors along the riverbank. Expect it to be busy on weekend nights. During the day the bridge is functional but less distinctive, and it can be hot and exposed with little shade.

Combine it with

Da Nang Cathedral and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Đà Nẵng are both about 0.7km away and easy to pair with a riverside walk. The Museum of Cham Sculpture is 1.4km off, worth a stop if you have more time. Dragon River Bridge, 1.2km away, is another good option for an evening walk, especially if you want to compare the two bridges' lighting displays.
