Overview

Mbudya Island is an uninhabited landmass within Dar es Salaam's marine protected area, preserved in its natural state. It is recognized as a habitat for the endangered coconut crab. Travellers visit primarily for swimming, snorkeling around shallow reefs, and walking coastal nature paths away from the city.

Getting There

From central Dar es Salaam, drive north by taxi or car to mainland boat departure points near Kunduchi or Msasani (30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic). Motorboats make the sea crossing in roughly 15 to 25 minutes.

Time to Allow

Plan for 4 to 6 hours on site, or a full day when including round-trip boat and road travel.

When to Go

The dry seasons (June to October and December to February) offer clearer water and calmer crossings. Morning departures provide the calmest sea conditions. The beach gets crowded on weekends and public holidays, while weekdays are much quieter.

Nearby Attractions

Combine a visit with nearby marine and mainland points of interest:

  • Pangavini Island (2.4km): Uninhabited protected island.
  • Bongoyo Island (5.2km): Marine reserve island to the south.
  • Mohammed VI Mosque, Dar es Salaam (15km): Mainland landmark.
  • Msimbazi River (15.9km): Major waterway in the city.
