Pangavini Island

Pangavini Island is an uninhabited islet located within the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve. Measuring just over 250 meters in length, the island is ringed by rock rather than sandy beaches. Travelers visit this site for its unspoiled natural scenery and the opportunity to explore a quiet environment away from developed tourist hubs.

Getting There

Access to the island is by boat from the Dar es Salaam city centre. The journey involves a boat trip across the harbor and into the marine reserve. Travel time varies depending on the vessel used, but typically takes between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours each way.

Duration of Visit

Because of its small size and lack of infrastructure, a few hours are generally sufficient to explore the perimeter and the rocky shoreline. Most visitors spend a half-day on the islet before returning to the mainland or moving to a larger nearby island.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is during the dry seasons to avoid heavy rains. Morning visits are recommended to avoid the peak midday heat. As it is uninhabited and smaller than neighboring islands, it does not experience the same level of crowding as more developed sites in the reserve.

Combining with Other Sites

The island's location makes it practical to combine with other nearby destinations in the marine reserve:

  • Mbudya Island: 2.4km away
  • Bongoyo Island: 4.1km away
For those returning to the city, the Mohammed VI Mosque (13.2km) and the Msimbazi River (14.3km) are accessible landmarks on the mainland.
