Modes of Transport
Delhi's transport landscape is split between modern rail and traditional road vehicles. Choosing the right one depends on your destination and the time of day.
- Delhi Metro: The most efficient way to travel long distances. It wins for speed and reliability, bypassing the city's heavy traffic. It is ideal for moving between New Delhi and Old Delhi.
- Auto-Rickshaws: Best for short distances and narrow lanes, especially in Old Delhi. They are faster than cars in congested areas but require negotiation on fares unless using an app.
- Ride-Hailing Apps: Useful for door-to-door comfort and fixed pricing. These win for nighttime travel or when carrying heavy luggage.
Tickets and Passes
The Delhi Metro Smart Card is recommended for those staying several days, as it reduces queuing at token machines. However, it does not suit short-term visitors who only plan to make one or two trips; for them, single-journey QR tickets or tokens are more practical.
From Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) to City Center
- Airport Express Metro: The fastest option. It connects the airport to New Delhi Railway Station with minimal effort and a low cost band.
- App-based Cabs: High convenience as they provide direct transport to your destination. This involves higher cost and longer travel time due to traffic.
- Prepaid Taxis: Available at arrivals; similar in cost and effort to app-based cabs.
Practical Notes
- Rush Hours: Avoid the Metro and main roads during morning and evening peaks, as stations and arteries become extremely crowded.
- Luggage: The Metro has designated areas for bags, but avoid peak hours with large suitcases. Cabs are the only viable option for heavy luggage.
- Accessibility: Most Metro stations are equipped with lifts and escalators, making them more accessible than auto-rickshaws.
- Last Services: Metro services typically end around midnight. After this, ride-hailing apps are the primary safe option.
