How to Navigate Dire Dawa on Your First Visit: Districts, Transport, and Practical Tips

Understanding Dire Dawa's Dual Layout
Dire Dawa is divided into two distinct sectors by the dry sand bed of the Dechatu River.
- Kezira: The planned railway quarter, laid out in a grid with wide, tree-lined boulevards, colonial-era architecture, and shaded coffee houses.
- Megala: The traditional Muslim trading quarter across the riverbed, defined by dense alleys, active commerce, and the sprawling Taiwan Market.
Airport Transit and Getting Around
Flights land at Aba Tenna Dejazmach Yilma International Airport (DIR), northwest of Kezira.
- Airport transfers: Unmetered taxis wait outside arrivals. Agree on your destination before boarding, as ride-hailing apps do not operate here.
- City transit: Three-wheeled bajaj vehicles handle local transit. Flag one down for shared corridor hops or hire it privately. Kezira is walkable under shade trees, but bajajs are best for cross-river trips.
What First-Timers Get Wrong
- Fighting midday heat: Dire Dawa is warmer than the central highlands. Activity slows sharply from noon to mid-afternoon. Schedule outdoor exploration for morning or late afternoon.
- Expecting digital payments: Digital fare apps and card terminals are absent from street transit. Carry small-denomination local cash for bajajs and vendors.
- Treating it only as a stopover: Rushing to Harar misses Dire Dawa's unique railway history and renowned eastern coffee trade.
Sensible Trip Flow
Start your first morning in Kezira touring the historic railway station area and sampling freshly brewed coffee. As temperatures cool in the late afternoon, head into Megala to see the bustling market stalls. Save regional highland excursions for subsequent days.
