Castle Rock

Castle Rock is a volcanic hill formed approximately 350 million years ago and later shaped by glacial erosion. It serves as the natural foundation for Edinburgh Castle. Travelers visit this site to see the geological formation and to access elevated vantage points that provide views of the city layout.

Getting There

The rock is located at the western end of the city centre. From the main shopping districts or the Royal Mile, it is accessible via a short walk. Depending on your starting point in the centre, it typically takes 5 to 15 minutes to reach the base of the hill.

Time Allotment

The amount of time spent here depends on whether you are exploring the geology or visiting the fortress on top. Allow 1 to 2 hours to walk the perimeter and observe the rock formations and the surrounding views.

When to Visit

The site is open to the elements, so weather-appropriate clothing is necessary regardless of the season. It gets crowded during the peak summer months and during the August festivals. Visiting in the early morning typically avoids the largest crowds.

Because of its central location, this site can be combined with several other points of interest:

  • St Margaret's (0km): Situated on the site.
  • Princes Street Gardens (0.2km): Located at the foot of the hill.
