St Margaret's Chapel

Located within the walls of Edinburgh Castle, this Romanesque chapel is the oldest surviving building in the city. Visitors go here to see 12th-century architecture and learn about the early history of Scotland in a small, preserved religious space.

Getting There

The chapel is situated inside Edinburgh Castle. From the city centre, you can walk up the Royal Mile to the castle gates. The walk typically takes 10 to 15 minutes depending on your starting point.

Time Requirement

Because of its modest size, you should allow approximately 20 to 30 minutes to tour the interior and read the historical information provided.

When to Visit

The chapel is located in a high-traffic tourist area and frequently gets crowded, particularly during the peak summer months and the August festivals. Visiting early in the morning may help avoid the largest crowds.

Combining Your Visit

Since the chapel is located within the castle grounds, it is best visited as part of a larger exploration of the immediate area. You can combine this stop with the following:

  • Edinburgh Castle (0km): The chapel is a part of this larger complex.
  • Castle Rock (0km): The volcanic outcrop upon which the chapel sits.
  • Princes Street Gardens (0.2km): Located just below the castle walls.
  • Grassmarket (0.3km): A historic market area within short walking distance.
