Overview

Dalkeith Palace is an 18th-century Scottish country house standing on the site of a medieval castle. Historically the seat of the Dukes of Buccleuch, it appeals to travellers interested in regional history and classical country architecture.

Getting There

From Edinburgh city centre, local buses take about 40 to 50 minutes. A car or taxi ride takes roughly 25 to 35 minutes. Driving from Edinburgh Airport (EDI) takes around 30 minutes via the bypass.

Time to Allow

Budget 1.5 to 2 hours to view the building exterior and walk the surrounding estate grounds.

When to Visit

Weekday mornings are quietest. Weekends see more local visitors, but the grounds rarely feel congested due to the open parkland. Spring through autumn offers the best conditions for walking.
