Inchcolm

Inchcolm is an island located in the Firth of Forth. Visitors go there to see the ruins of a medieval Augustinian abbey and the remains of military fortifications used during both World Wars. The island combines historical architecture with a natural coastal environment.

Getting There

Access to the island is by boat from the coast near Edinburgh. The journey from the city centre involves a short drive or bus trip to the departure point, followed by a ferry crossing. The total travel time typically takes around one to two hours depending on the transport method used to reach the pier.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately three to four hours to explore the abbey ruins, walk the island perimeter, and view the military installations.

When to Visit

The island is best visited during the spring and summer months when weather conditions are more stable for boat travel. It is advisable to arrive early in the day to avoid the largest groups of tourists. Be aware that boat schedules are subject to weather and tide conditions.

Nearby Attractions

Because the island is accessed by water, you can combine this trip with other coastal or nearby sites:

  • Inchmickery (2.6km): Another small island in the Firth of Forth.
  • Cramond Island (4km): A tidal island accessible by foot at low tide.
  • River Almond (5.5km): A river valley for nature walks.
  • Lauriston Castle (6.6km): A historic estate on the city's edge.
