The Scott Monument

Located in Princes Street Gardens, this Victorian Gothic spire was built to honor the novelist Sir Walter Scott. It is one of the largest monuments to a writer in the world. Travelers visit to view its intricate stonework from the gardens or to climb the internal spiral staircase for a view of the Edinburgh city center.

Getting There

The monument is situated in the heart of the city center. If you are staying near the Royal Mile or the Waverley Station area, it is a short walk of approximately 5 to 10 minutes. It is easily accessible via the main pedestrian thoroughfares of Princes Street.

Time Allocation

If you are viewing the structure from the ground, 15 to 30 minutes is sufficient. If you plan to climb to the viewing platforms, allow 1 to 2 hours, as the ascent is steep and the stairs are narrow.

When to Visit

The area around the monument is a primary tourist hub and gets crowded throughout the day. To avoid the largest crowds, visit in the early morning. The gardens surrounding the spire are accessible year-round, though weather conditions can affect the climb during winter months.
