About St Giles' Cathedral

Located on the Royal Mile, this historic church took its present form over several centuries beginning in the 14th century. It served as a central focal point for the Scottish Reformation and is closely tied to leader John Knox. Travellers visit to view its Gothic stone vaulting, stained-glass windows, and the Thistle Chapel, as well as to trace Edinburgh's religious and political past.

Getting There

The building stands directly in the Old Town on the High Street. From Princes Street or Edinburgh Waverley railway station in the city centre, it takes roughly 5 to 10 minutes on foot walking uphill via Cockburn Street or North Bridge.

Time to Allow

Set aside 30 to 60 minutes for a standard self-guided visit to walk the nave, explore the side aisles, and view the interior chapels.

When to Visit

Mornings and late afternoons are the quietest times to visit. The interior gets crowded around midday and throughout the peak summer travel season. Access to specific sections of the church may be limited during scheduled services or choir rehearsals.
