City Layout and Key Zones

Unlike ancient Silk Road centers, Fergana was founded in the late nineteenth century as a planned regional hub with wide, grid-like boulevards and thick tree cover. Divide the city into three main zones:

  • The Central Core: Centered on Al-Farghani Park and the Regional Museum. This walkable area holds administrative offices, leafy promenades, and quiet dining spots.
  • The Bazaar Quarter: Surrounding the Central Bazaar, this is the lively focal point for daily commerce, fresh produce, and local banking services.
  • The Northern Corridor: The highway corridor linking to Margilan, home to regional transport stands and shared-taxi depots.

Arriving and Getting Around

Fergana International Airport is located just south of town. Hailing a taxi outside the terminal or using regional ride-hailing apps provides quick access to downtown. Inside the city, transit relies on fixed-route minibuses and curbside taxis. For intercity excursions across the valley, shared taxis depart from designated terminals near the bazaar once every passenger seat is occupied.

What First-Timers Get Wrong

Expecting medieval monuments inside the city: Fergana features leafy avenues and Soviet-era urban planning rather than ancient turquoise tilework. The valley's traditional artisan workshops—such as Margilan silk factories and Rishtan potteries—lie in adjacent towns. Treat Fergana as a tranquil base for day excursions rather than a standalone open-air museum.

Sensible Shape for a First Trip

Start your first morning exploring the shade of Al-Farghani Park, the regional museum, and the central market. On your second day, make short half-day trips to Margilan and Rishtan. Save longer transit journeys to Kokand for later in your stay.
