Umi no Nakamichi

Umi no Nakamichi

Umi no Nakamichi is a tombolo in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It connects Kyushu Island and Shikanoshima Island. It is 8km in length and up to 2.5 km in width. Its northern coast borders Genkai Sea and its southern coast Hakata Bay.

What it is

Umi no Nakamichi is the long, narrow sandbar (tombolo) that connects the Kyushu mainland to Shikanoshima Island, running about 8km with the Genkai Sea on one side and Hakata Bay on the other. There's no single monument here — it's a strip of land shaped by wind and current over centuries, and the appeal is the coastal scenery and the sense of standing between two different bodies of water rather than any single sight.

Getting there

From central Fukuoka, JR trains run to Uminonakamichi Station in around 30-40 minutes. The area is also easily combined with a visit to the seaside park or marine park next door, both served by the same station.

How long to stay

Walking or cycling a stretch of the sandbar and taking in the coastline can be done in an hour or two. Add more time if you're pairing it with the neighbouring park or aquarium.

When to go

Coastal winds can be strong, especially in winter, so a calmer day makes for a more comfortable walk. Weekends and holidays draw more visitors to the wider area, particularly around the adjacent park, so weekday visits tend to be quieter.

Combine it with

  • Marine World Uminonakamichi (0.7km) - an aquarium right next to the sandbar.
  • Uminonakamichi Seaside Park (1.5km) - a large park with beaches and open space, good for a longer stop.
  • Hakata Bay (3.9km) - the body of water forming the tombolo's southern edge.
  • Island City (4.3km) - a man-made island in the bay, reachable as a further stop if extending the day.
