Overview

Built in 1800 on Pitt Street, Kong Hock Keong Temple is a Mahayana Buddhist temple dedicated to Guanyin and the oldest Chinese temple in Penang. It remains an active place of worship characterized by traditional architecture, incense smoke, and local worshippers paying respects.

The temple sits in central George Town and is reachable on foot from most city centre locations in 5 to 15 minutes. Taxis and ride-hailing vehicles from across the city or Penang International Airport (PEN) can drop passengers along Pitt Street.

Plan for 20 to 30 minutes. This gives enough time to view the interior altars, courtyard, and architectural details without rushing.

When to Visit

Mornings are best to avoid midday heat. The complex becomes heavily crowded during major religious dates and Lunar New Year, producing thick smoke from joss sticks. Visitors sensitive to smoke should visit during quiet weekday mornings.
