Where to Stay for Station Access and Sightseeing

Ghent’s historic center lies about two kilometers north of its primary rail hub, so choosing a base depends on whether you value immediate transit or step-out access to landmarks.

Stationsbuurt (Gent-Sint-Pieters)

Best for: Airport transfers, regional day trips, and travelers with heavy luggage.

Gent-Sint-Pieters provides direct trains to Brussels Airport, Bruges, and Brussels. Staying nearby lets you bypass rolling luggage across cobblestones. Frequent trams run from the station to Korenmarkt in twelve minutes, making trips to the historic core effortless.

Historic Center and Korenmarkt

Best for: Walking to monuments, canal views, and evening dining.

Staying near Korenmarkt or Graslei puts major sights at your doorstep. The core is pedestrianized and scenic. Direct trams connect to Gent-Sint-Pieters, while the secondary Gent-Dampoort station is a fifteen-minute walk northeast for regional trains.

Transit Checks Before Booking

  • Tram connections: Check walking distance to tram stops linking directly to Gent-Sint-Pieters.
  • Pedestrian zone rules: Vehicle restrictions mean taxis cannot always reach hotel entrances, requiring walks over cobblestones.
  • Building access: Historic quarter lodgings often lack elevators and feature steep stairs.

Seasonality and Booking Timing

Rooms sell out months ahead during the ten-day Gentse Feesten in July, when transit lines into the center are diverted. The large student population keeps the city active from September to June. For easier availability near rail stations and sights, target April, May, or October.
