Overview

Gravensteen is a medieval castle in central Ghent, built in 1180 for the Counts of Flanders. It later served as a courthouse, prison, and mint. Today, it operates as a museum where visitors can tour interior chambers, view historic weaponry, and walk along the outdoor ramparts.

Getting There

Located in the city center, the fortress is a 5-minute walk north from the central Korenmarkt area. City trams also stop directly outside.

Suggested Duration

Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to tour the grounds, listen to the audio guide, and explore the keep and battlements.

When to Visit

The site gets crowded during midday hours and on weekends. Visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon avoids bottlenecks on the narrow spiral staircases. Wear sturdy footwear, as historic stone steps can be steep and slippery when wet.
