Understanding Gibraltar's Layout

Gibraltar is dominated by the Rock, with most urban life concentrated on the western slope:

  • Town Centre: The pedestrian core along Main Street and Casemates Square.
  • Upper Rock: The nature reserve holding St. Michael's Cave, siege tunnels, and the Moorish Castle.
  • South District: Coastal residential areas extending to Europa Point.
  • East Side: Traditional seaside settlements, notably Catalan Bay.

Arriving and Getting Around

Gibraltar International Airport (GIB) borders the northern frontier. You can walk to Casemates Square or take a public bus from outside the terminal. Taxis wait outside arrivals.

Walking is ideal for the lower town. Local buses connect Casemates Square to Europa Point. For the Upper Rock, use the cable car, an authorized tour, or marked hiking paths; private foreign cars are barred from the reserve.

First-Timer Mistakes to Avoid

  • Driving across from Spain: Border queues for cars can be severe. Park in La Línea and walk across the border instead.
  • Carrying food near macaques: Barbary macaques actively snatch bags and food. Keep snacks sealed in backpacks.
  • Wearing flimsy footwear: Roads across the Upper Rock are steep and taxing. Wear sturdy walking shoes.
  • Rushing the border: Always carry your passport, as entering Gibraltar means clearing British and Schengen immigration checks.

Sensible Shape for a First Trip

Tour the Upper Rock Nature Reserve first thing in the morning to see St. Michael's Cave and the tunnels before peak tour hours. Spend the afternoon strolling Main Street and Casemates Square. Save Europa Point and Catalan Bay for later in your stay.
