Seasonal Weather and Conditions

Giza experiences a desert climate with significant temperature swings between summer and winter. Because the Giza Plateau is an open expanse of sand and rock, there is little shade, making the perceived temperature higher than in downtown Cairo.

  • Winter (November to February): This is the peak season. Temperatures are mild and pleasant, making it the most comfortable time to walk around the pyramids. Daylight hours are shorter, and evenings can be surprisingly chilly.
  • Spring (March to May): A transitional period. While temperatures are warm, this season is prone to Khamsin (sandstorms), which can reduce visibility and affect air quality.
  • Summer (June to August): Extremely hot and dry. The sun is intense on the plateau, often reaching temperatures that make midday sightseeing hazardous. Crowds are generally thinner than in winter.
  • Autumn (September to October): Temperatures begin to drop from the summer peaks, though it remains warm. It serves as a shoulder season before the winter rush.

Choosing Your Travel Window

For Sightseeing: October to April is ideal. The cooler air allows for longer explorations of the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx without heat exhaustion.

For Budget and Quiet: May to September offers fewer tourists, though you must plan your visits for very early morning to avoid the peak heat.

Periods to Note: During major religious holidays, local domestic travel increases, which can impact the availability of transport and guides. Prices for accommodation typically rise during the December holiday peak.

Preparation and Packing

Regardless of the season, the Giza Plateau is dusty. Travelers arriving via Cairo International Airport (CAI) should prepare based on their window:

  • Winter: Layered clothing is essential. Bring a light jacket or sweater for early morning starts and evening returns to the city.
  • Summer: Lightweight, breathable fabrics (linen or cotton) and wide-brimmed hats are mandatory. High-SPF sunscreen and electrolyte-rich drinks are necessary for the plateau.
  • General: Sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes are recommended to navigate the sandy and rocky terrain of the archaeological site.
