Hanging Church
Overview
The Hanging Church is one of Egypt's oldest Coptic Orthodox churches, with origins dating to the 3rd century. Built over a gatehouse of a Roman fortress, its nave is suspended above a passage. Travellers visit to see traditional Coptic architecture, historic icons, and timber roof work modeled after Noah's Ark.
Getting There
Located in Old Cairo, the church is directly accessible via the Cairo Metro. Take Line 1 to Mar Girgis station, which exits right outside the complex. The trip from central Cairo takes 15 to 20 minutes by metro or 20 to 40 minutes by taxi depending on traffic.
Time to Allow
Plan to spend 45 to 60 minutes to view the central courtyard, nave, and chapels.
When to Visit
Arrive in the morning on weekdays to avoid larger tour groups. Sunday mornings bring active church services, which can crowd the interior and limit access. The cooler months from October through April are the most comfortable for walking around.
