What to Expect

Santay Island is a natural reserve located in the Guayas River just off Guayaquil. Settled since the 1950s by a small local community, the area offers a quiet environment to explore river wetlands, mangrove vegetation, and birdlife on foot or by bicycle.

Getting There

Access from downtown Guayaquil is via a pedestrian and cycling bridge connecting the mainland to the island. Reaching the entrance from the city center takes around 15 to 30 minutes on foot, by bike, or via a short taxi ride.

Time to Allow

Plan for 2 to 3 hours. This allows sufficient time to cross the bridge, walk the elevated boardwalks, visit the village area, and return.

When to Visit

Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid peak midday heat and sun along exposed sections of the trail. Weekends draw steady crowds of local cyclists and walkers, while weekdays are substantially quieter.

Nearby Sights

You can combine your trip with nearby central landmarks:

  • Guayas River (3.1km): Walk along the city's riverfront promenade.
  • Torre Morisca, Guayaquil (4km): The landmark Moorish clock tower.
  • Parque seminario (4.2km): A historic park known for its urban iguanas.
  • Guayaquil Metropolitan Cathedral (4.3km): Located right by Parque seminario.
