Carmel Hai-Bar Nature Reserve
What It Is
Carmel Hai-Bar Nature Reserve is a wildlife breeding and conservation facility in Carmel National Park on Mount Carmel. Unlike a standard zoo, it breeds and rehabilitates endangered or locally extinct Mediterranean animals—such as Persian fallow deer and raptors—for reintroduction into the wild. Visitors walk marked trails to see animals living in large natural enclosures.
Getting There
Located south of central Haifa near the university, it is a 15- to 25-minute drive from the city centre. Local buses from central Haifa take 30 to 45 minutes, with a short walk from the university area stop.
Time to Allow
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to walk the trails, view the enclosures and aviaries, and see the ravine viewpoints.
When to Go
Mornings are best since animals are active and temperatures are cooler. Midday heat in summer can be uncomfortable due to limited trail shade. Weekends and holidays are busy; weekday visits are much quieter.
