About the Site

Misliya Cave is an archaeological rock shelter situated on Mount Carmel. It contains significant Paleolithic-era strata and is known for producing the second-oldest Homo sapiens fossil discovered outside Africa. Travellers interested in archaeology and human evolution visit to observe the natural limestone formation and its prehistoric context.

Getting There

Located south of central Haifa, the site is accessible by car or taxi in roughly 15 to 25 minutes via Route 4. Local buses also travel from downtown Haifa to stops along the foot of Mount Carmel, followed by a walk up marked access paths.

Time to Allow

Allow around 1 to 1.5 hours to walk the trail, view the rock shelter, and take in the surrounding landscape.

When to Visit

Spring and autumn provide mild weather for hiking the rocky terrain. During summer, visit in the early morning to avoid midday heat. The location rarely experiences large crowds, though local hiking trails see more people on weekends.
