How to get around Harbour Island using golf carts, walking, and water taxis

Getting Around Harbour Island
Harbour Island spans just three miles in length. With no standard car rentals, getting around depends on three practical modes:
- Golf Carts: The main motorized option. They win for reaching outer beaches, hauling groceries, and evening travel across unlit roads.
- Walking: Best inside historic Dunmore Town, where narrow lanes and historic cottages sit close together. Heat makes midday walks demanding.
- Water Taxis: Small motorboats linking Government Dock to North Eleuthera. They run continuously on demand during daylight.
Passes and Rental Terms
There are no municipal transit passes. Golf carts are hired by the day or week. Multi-day rentals suit visitors staying outside Dunmore Town, while travelers staying in the village center can walk everywhere and skip rental costs entirely.
Transfers from Nassau (NAS)
Travel from Lynden Pindling International Airport involves two primary routes:
- Flight via North Eleuthera: Fly from NAS to North Eleuthera, take a short taxi to the dock, then a five-minute water taxi. This is the fastest route with the least physical effort, sitting in the highest cost tier.
- Ferry from Nassau: Take a taxi to the Nassau terminal, then an inter-island ferry to Government Dock. It takes several hours at a moderate cost tier, but schedules are infrequent.
Practical Details
Service Hours: Water taxis operate sunrise to sunset; after-dark crossings require private arrangements at higher rates.
Luggage: Golf carts have minimal trunk space. Dock handlers assist with transferring luggage from boats to carts.
Accessibility: Water taxis require stepping over open gunwales. Sandy surfaces and lack of sidewalks make wheelchair transit difficult.
