Island Layout and Key Districts

Harbour Island is roughly three miles long and half a mile wide. Organize your bearings into three main areas:

  • Dunmore Town (Harbour Side): The historic settlement on the west coast. It contains the primary passenger docks, colonial architecture, grocery shops, and civic buildings.
  • The Atlantic Beach (East Coast): The ocean side featuring the continuous pink sand shoreline, low dunes, and coastal dining.
  • North and South Ends: Quieter residential corridors connected by narrow paved lanes.

Arriving and Getting Around

From Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) in Nassau, connect to North Eleuthera Airport (ELH) via domestic flight, or take an inter-island ferry. From ELH, take a short land taxi to Three Island Dock, then a quick water taxi to Harbour Island.

On the island, golf carts are the standard vehicle for visitors. Traditional car rentals and rideshare apps do not operate here. Dunmore Town itself is easily covered on foot.

Common First-Timer Mistakes

  • Underestimating transfer steps: Getting here from Nassau requires air/ferry transit, a land taxi, and a water taxi. Plan connections during daylight hours.
  • Arriving without a golf cart reservation: Carts frequently book out during peak travel periods. Secure your rental before arrival.
  • Overlooking the harbor side: While the eastern beach is famous, the western bayside offers calm water, sunset views, and essential services.

Sensible First Trip Itinerary

Begin with a walking tour of Dunmore Town to learn the street layout and locate key services. Spend morning hours on the eastern Atlantic beach when winds are usually lower. Save golf cart exploration of the outer lanes and harbor waterfront for late afternoons.
