Overview

Agios Marcos is a former Roman Catholic basilica constructed in 1239 during Venetian rule in Heraklion, Greece. It historically served the island's Venetian nobility and officials. Travelers visit to view its surviving Venetian architectural features and understand the city's medieval administrative and religious heritage.

Getting There

Situated in central Heraklion, the building is accessible on foot from anywhere in the city center within two to five minutes. From Heraklion International Airport (HER), public buses and taxis reach the central area in about 15 to 20 minutes.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend 20 to 30 minutes inside and around the building to view the structural details and historical exhibits.

When to Visit

Morning and late afternoon visits are best to avoid the heaviest foot traffic. Midday tends to be crowded due to the central pedestrian zone. Spring and autumn provide moderate weather for walking around the area.
