The Best Window: November to February

The best time to visit Ibadan is during the dry season, from November to February. Arriving via Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) in Lagos, travelers connect to Ibadan using the standard-gauge train to Moniya. Dry roads make travel across districts like Bodija, Dugbe, and Agodi reliable, avoiding the flash floods that disrupt movement during heavy rains.

Harmattan Conditions: December and January

In December and January, the Harmattan brings Saharan dust. The sky turns hazy, humidity plummets, and while afternoons remain warm, nights and early mornings feel surprisingly cool. Dust can irritate eyes and lungs, but dry conditions make touring Mapo Hall, Bower's Tower, and the University of Ibadan campus much easier than in rainy months.

Difficult Months: May to October

The wet season spans April to October, with peak downpours from May through July and in September. Flash runoff causes heavy bottlenecks around transit junctions like Iwo Road and Challenge, while unpaved side streets turn muddy. March is also difficult due to intense pre-monsoon heat and rising humidity.

Crowds and Seasonal Logistics

Late December brings festive travel surges, tightening Lagos–Ibadan train availability and raising local transport rates. In mid-November, the University of Ibadan convocation fills local guesthouses around Agbowo.

What to Pack

  • Harmattan (Dec–Jan): Lip balm, rich moisturizer, eye drops, and a morning jacket.
  • Rainy Season (May–Oct): Waterproof footwear, an umbrella, and a dry bag for electronics.
  • Year-Round: Walking shoes for uneven pavement and insect repellent.
