Alpenzoo Innsbruck

Located in Innsbruck, Austria, this facility is one of the highest-altitude zoos in Europe. It focuses on animals native to the Alpine region, housing them in enclosures that mimic the surrounding mountain terrain. Visitors go here to see mountain-dwelling species in a setting that reflects their natural habitat.

Getting There

The zoo is situated on a mountain slope above the city centre. The most common way to reach it is via the Hungerburgbahn funicular, which transports visitors up the mountain. The journey from the city centre takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes depending on the transport method used.

Visit Duration

Due to the sloping terrain and the layout of the exhibits, visitors should allow 3 to 5 hours to walk through the entire site and view the animals.

When to Visit

The experience varies by season, as the Alpine environment changes significantly between winter and summer. To avoid the largest crowds, visiting on weekdays or during the early morning is recommended. The site can become crowded during peak tourist seasons and school holidays.

Nearby Attractions

The zoo is located away from the immediate city core, but several landmarks are accessible upon returning to the centre:

  • Collegium Canisianum (0.7km)
  • Hofgarten (1km)
  • Innsbruck Cathedral (1.3km)
  • Jesuitenkirche Innsbruck (1.4km)
