Fort São Sebastião

Located at the northern tip of Stone Town on Mozambique Island, this Portuguese fortification was constructed between 1558 and 1608. It is one of the oldest surviving forts in sub-Saharan Africa. Visitors go here to see the colonial military architecture and the strategic layout used to defend the island during the Portuguese era.

Getting There

The fort is situated within the walkable perimeter of Stone Town. From the center of the town, you can reach the site on foot in approximately 10 to 15 minutes by walking north toward the coast.

Duration of Visit

Allow roughly 1 to 2 hours to walk through the fortifications, explore the ramparts, and view the surrounding coastline.

When to Visit

Visit during the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. The island is generally less crowded than mainland tourist hubs, though the site is most accessible during the dry season.
