Sights worth seeing
Castles & palaces
Fort São Sebastião
This fort stands at the northern tip of Stone Town on Mozambique Island. Portuguese builders began construction in 1558 and took about 50 years to complete it, making it one of the oldest surviving forts in sub-Saharan Africa.
Views & landmarks
Mozambique Island Bridge
This bridge spans the Indian Ocean to connect Mozambique Island with the mainland. Crossing it marks the start of any visit to the island, once the capital of Portuguese East Africa.
Nature
Chocas Mar
This unspoiled beach lies about 40 kilometers north of Mozambique Island, across Mossuril Bay. It's reachable only by unpaved road or boat, making it a great spot to enjoy quiet, uncrowded scenery.
Temples & religious sites
Church Saint Anthony
This old church stands at the southern tip of Mozambique Island, overlooking the fishing village and harbor below. Mass is no longer held here, but its weathered charm and seaside views make it a peaceful spot for a quiet walk.
