The Island of Mozambique is a compact, pedestrian-friendly destination. Because the historic center is small and largely car-free in its narrowest alleys, the primary mode of transport is walking. For longer distances across the island or trips to the mainland, motorized options are necessary.

Local Transport Modes

• Walking: The most effective way to explore the forts, churches, and colonial architecture. It is the only way to access the narrowest streets of the old town.
• Tuk-tuks: Ideal for crossing from one end of the island to the other or reaching the beaches. They are faster than walking and more agile than cars.

Airport to Island Transfers

Visitors typically arrive via Nacala Airport (MNC). The journey to the island involves a significant drive to the mainland bridge and a crossing to the island.
