Overview

Situ Gintung is an artificial lake in the Tangerang area, formed by a dam built in 1933 during Dutch colonial rule. The site also carries the history of a tragic 2009 dam collapse. Travellers visit to see an open water catchment and urban green space outside the city center, suitable for simple walking and observing local community life.

Getting There

From central Jakarta, the area is reached by car, taxi, or ride-hailing service heading south. Travel time typically ranges from 45 to 90 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Time to Allow

Allow 1 to 2 hours to stroll along the accessible banks and rest by the water.

When to Go

Visit during early morning or late afternoon to avoid the intense midday heat. Lakeside paths can become muddy during rainy periods, making dry weather preferable for walking. The area gets noticeably crowded with local residents on weekend mornings.

  • Basoeki Abdullah Museum (3.8km)
  • Ragunan Zoo (6.4km)
