Western Wall Plaza

The Western Wall Plaza is a large open square located in the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City. It serves as the primary gathering area for pilgrims and visitors accessing the Western Wall. Travelers visit this site to observe religious practices, participate in prayer, or view the ancient limestone retaining wall.

Getting There

The plaza is located within the pedestrian zones of the Old City. From the city center, visitors typically take a taxi or public bus to the nearest city gate, such as Jaffa Gate or Zion Gate, and continue on foot. The walk from the city gates generally takes between 10 and 20 minutes depending on the starting point.

Duration of Visit

Depending on the purpose of the visit, allow between 30 minutes to two hours. Those visiting briefly for sightseeing spend less time, while those engaging in prayer or reflection typically stay longer.

When to Visit

The area is frequently crowded, particularly on Fridays, Saturdays, and during Jewish holidays. To avoid the largest crowds, visit during weekday mornings. The Mediterranean climate makes spring and autumn the most temperate seasons for visiting this open-air space.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its central location in the Old City, the plaza can be combined with several nearby sites:

  • Western Wall (0.1km)
  • The Temple Institute (0.1km)
  • Jewish Quarter (0.1km)
  • Al-Aqsa Mosque (0.2km)
