Arashan River

The Arashan River originates in the Teskey Ala-Too mountain range and flows through a valley near Karakol and Lake Issyk-Kul. Travelers visit this area primarily for trekking and hiking. The river route connects the village of Altyn-Arashan, known for its hot springs, with the Palatka Glacier.

Getting There

Access from Karakol city centre typically requires a 4WD vehicle due to the rugged mountain terrain. The drive to the valley entrance and the subsequent ascent takes several hours depending on the specific destination along the river.

Duration of Visit

Because the area is used for trekking and visiting remote hot springs, visitors generally allow two to three days. This provides enough time to hike along the riverbanks and reach the glacier or the village.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is during the summer months when the mountain passes are clear of snow and the trekking paths are accessible. High-altitude weather can change rapidly, so checking local conditions is necessary before departing.

Nearby Attractions

The river valley can be combined with cultural sites in Karakol. Depending on your itinerary, you may visit:

  • Holy Trinity Church (11.4km)
  • Karakol Dungan Mosque (11.9km)
  • Przhevalsky Museum (20.5km)
