Seasonal Weather and Conditions
Kathmandu's climate is divided into three primary seasons, each significantly affecting visibility and accessibility.
Spring (March to May)
This is one of the peak travel windows. Temperatures are mild and pleasant, and the valley is lush. Daylight is ample for exploring the city's temples. However, this period can see occasional pre-monsoon showers and increasing crowds of trekkers.
Monsoon (June to August)
The rainy season brings heavy precipitation and high humidity. While the city becomes green, heavy rains can cause traffic congestion and flight delays at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM). Visibility of the Himalayas is usually poor.
Autumn (September to November)
Widely considered the best time to visit. The air is crisp, skies are clear, and the weather is stable. This is the busiest tourist season, meaning popular sites and transport options are in high demand.
Winter (December to February)
Days are sunny but short, and nights are cold. While the city is less crowded, smog and fog often settle in the valley, reducing visibility. It is a quiet period for city exploration but can be chilly for outdoor walking.
Planning by Trip Type
- Cultural Sightseeing: October to December offers the most stable weather for walking between Durbar Squares.
- Budget Travel: June to August sees lower demand, though rain is a constant factor.
- Nature and Hiking: March to May is ideal for seeing rhododendrons in bloom around the valley.
Local Events and Availability
Major festivals like Dashain and Tihar (usually October or November) are significant. During these periods, many local shops may close, and domestic transport becomes heavily congested as people return to their hometowns. Accommodation availability tightens during the autumn peak.
Packing Essentials
- Spring/Autumn: Light layers, a windbreaker, and comfortable walking shoes for uneven temple pavements.
- Monsoon: A sturdy umbrella, waterproof footwear, and quick-dry clothing.
- Winter: Thermal base layers, a heavy jacket, and scarves for the cold evening drops.
