About the Temple
Suryavinayak Temple is a Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesh, situated on a forested hill in Bhaktapur. As one of the Kathmandu Valley's prominent Ganesh shrines, it offers travellers a look at active religious practices, traditional Newari architecture, and views across the surrounding landscape.
Getting There
Located roughly 15 kilometres east of central Kathmandu, reaching the site by taxi takes 45 to 75 minutes via the Araniko Highway. Public buses run from Kathmandu to the Suryabinayak junction, from where stone stairs lead up to the complex.
Time to Allow
Set aside 45 minutes to 1 hour to climb the steps, explore the shrine area, and observe the surroundings.
When to Visit
Early morning is the best time to arrive to catch the rising sun and observe morning rituals. Tuesdays and Saturdays are primary worship days for Ganesh, bringing heavy crowds and long queues. The dry months of autumn and spring offer the clearest weather.
