How to plan your first visit to Kigali, Rwanda

City Layout and Districts
Kigali is defined by its topography, often called the land of a thousand hills. The city is not a flat grid but a series of ridges and valleys. To navigate it, think of the city in three main zones:
- The City Center (CBD): The hub for government offices, banks, and business. It is the most densely built area.
- Nyarugenge: Home to the main markets and the historic center. This is where you will find the most traditional commercial activity.
- Gasabo: A larger district containing many residential areas, embassies, and newer developments.
Arrival and Getting Around
Your entry point is Kigali International Airport (KGL). Upon arrival, the most reliable way to reach your accommodation is via registered airport taxis or pre-arranged shuttles.
Once inside the city, transport is primarily based on:
- Ride-hailing apps: The most convenient way for visitors to navigate the hills.
- Moto-taxis: Motorcycle taxis are the fastest way to bypass traffic. Helmets are mandatory for both driver and passenger.
- Public buses: Available for longer cross-city trips, though less intuitive for first-timers.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
Plastic Bags: Rwanda has a strict ban on non-biodegradable plastic bags. Do not attempt to bring plastic shopping bags into the country; they will be confiscated at the airport.
Walking Assumptions: Because of the steep terrain, distances that look short on a map may require significant climbing. Use transport for most inter-district movements.
Environmental Rules: Public littering is strictly prohibited and heavily monitored. Always use designated bins.
Suggested First-Trip Itinerary
For a first visit, prioritize sites that provide historical and cultural context before exploring leisure spots:
- Priority: Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial to understand the country's history and resilience.
- Secondary: Explore the colorful markets in Nyarugenge for local crafts and textiles.
- Optional: Visit the various viewpoints across the hills for a panoramic view of the city's urban planning.
