Alipore Zoological Gardens
Established in 1876, this is the oldest zoo in India. Visitors go here to see a wide variety of animal species, including the Aldabra giant tortoise, Adwaita, who was noted for a lifespan exceeding 250 years. It serves as a primary center for wildlife observation within the city of Kolkata.

The zoo is located in the Alipore neighborhood. From the city center, it is accessible via taxi or auto-rickshaw. Depending on traffic conditions, the journey typically takes 20 to 40 minutes.

Due to the size of the grounds and the number of enclosures, visitors should allow approximately 3 to 5 hours to walk through the entire facility.
When to Visit
The zoo gets crowded during weekends and public holidays. To avoid the largest crowds, visiting on a weekday is recommended. Because of Kolkata's climate, the cooler months from November to February are generally more comfortable for walking than the hot, humid summer season.
