Belur Math

Located on the western bank of the Hooghly River, this site serves as the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Order. Founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1898, it is a center for the study and practice of the Ramakrishna mission. Travelers visit to explore the temple architecture and the quiet riverside grounds, which reflect modern Indian religious history.

The site is located on the outskirts of Kolkata. From the city center, visitors typically take a taxi, ride-sharing service, or a combination of metro and ferry. Depending on traffic conditions, the journey generally takes between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk through the temple complex, visit the main shrines, and spend time in the gardens by the river.

When to Visit

Early morning is recommended to avoid the midday heat and larger crowds. The site can become crowded during religious festivals and on weekends. The cooler months from November to February are generally the most comfortable for visiting.
