Kumortuli
Kumortuli is a traditional potters' quarter in northern Kolkata. It consists of narrow lanes lined with workshops where artisans craft clay idols, primarily for religious festivals. These sculptures are used locally and exported to other countries. Visitors go here to observe the manual process of idol-making, from the initial straw frames to the final painted details.
Getting There
The area is located in the northern part of the city. From the city centre, you can reach it via taxi, auto-rickshaw, or public bus. Depending on the traffic conditions in Kolkata, the journey typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.
Duration of Visit
Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk through the lanes and observe the various workshops. The layout is dense, and the pace of exploration is slow due to the narrow walkways.
When to Visit
The quarter is active year-round, but activity peaks in the months leading up to the Durga Puja festival. During this period, the workshops are most productive, but the lanes become very crowded. Visiting in the morning is generally preferred to avoid the midday heat and peak congestion.
