the Settlement Exhibition

What to Expect

The Settlement Exhibition is built over an in-situ archaeological excavation in central Reykjavík. Its centerpiece is a 10th-century longhouse—the oldest known Viking-age house ruins found in Iceland. Preserved artifacts and displays show daily life, tools, and structures from the early settlement period.

Getting There

Located downtown, the site is a 2- to 5-minute walk from the city centre. Travelers arriving from the wider capital area or Keflavík International Airport (KEF) can use local bus routes that stop nearby.

Visiting Duration

Plan for 45 to 75 minutes to examine the ruins, read the informational panels, and view the artifact displays.

When to Visit

Because the venue is entirely indoors, it works well in any season or bad weather. The layout is compact and can feel crowded around midday when group tours arrive. Visiting in the morning or later afternoon provides a quieter visit.
