Markham River

Overview

The Markham River is a 180-kilometer waterway in eastern Papua New Guinea that originates in the Finisterre Range and empties into the Huon Gulf at Lae. Travellers visit to view the broad, braided river channel and observe the surrounding regional landscape.

Getting There

The lower reaches sit along the western edge of Lae. Reaching the riverbanks or viewing areas from the city centre takes roughly 15 to 30 minutes by private vehicle, taxi, or local Public Motor Vehicle (PMV) travelling west.

Time to Spend

Allow 1 to 2 hours to observe the river landscape, take photographs, and explore designated roadside or bank viewing points.

When to Visit

Morning hours offer the best light and clearer weather before afternoon cloud cover develops. Drier months generally provide firmer ground along the banks and more consistent road conditions, whereas the wet season brings swollen waters and muddy terrain. The location is rarely crowded with tourists, though roadside stops can see local commuter traffic.

Nearby Attractions

A visit can be combined with other sites around Lae:

  • Markham Valley (0 km): Directly borders the river, featuring broad agricultural plains.
  • Roman Catholic Diocese of Lae (3.7 km): A central religious institution located closer to the town centre.
  • Atzera Range (10.1 km): A nearby ridge offering vantage points overlooking the river system and urban area.
