Lagos Climate: Dry Months vs. Heavy Rains

Lagos has two distinct seasons: the dry season from November to March and the rainy season from April to October. Daylight remains steady near 12 hours year-round, but humidity and travel conditions vary drastically between these periods.

When to Visit: November to February

The dry months provide the most reliable conditions for exploring Victoria Island, Lekki, and Lagos Lagoon.

  • November, January, and February: These months offer warm temperatures and dry roads. From late December through February, the continental Harmattan wind brings dusty haze from the Sahara, filtering the harsh sun and dropping evening humidity.
  • December Peak: December attracts thousands of diaspora visitors for festive events and concerts. Island accommodation fills up quickly, ride-hailing demand spikes, and transit across major bridges faces heavy congestion.

Months to Avoid: May to July

Heavy monsoon rains peak from May through July, with a secondary wet period in September and October. Frequent downpours cause street flooding that paralyzes road networks between the mainland and the islands. Lagoon boat trips to Makoko and commutes to Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) risk significant delays.

Packing and Transport Advice

In the dry season, pack lightweight breathable clothing, sun protection, and eye drops or face coverings for Harmattan dust. If traveling near rainy months, carry waterproof bags and durable water-resistant footwear. Regardless of season, always factor substantial extra travel time when crossing bridges between Ikeja and the coastal districts.
