Bagmati River

The Bagmati River is a sacred waterway in Hinduism that flows through the Kathmandu Valley. Travelers visit its banks, particularly near the Pashupatinath Temple, to observe traditional Hindu cremation rituals and funeral rites. The site provides a direct look at the cultural and religious practices surrounding life and death in Nepal.

Getting There

The river banks are accessible from the center of Kathmandu and Lalitpur via taxi or local transport. Depending on the starting point and traffic conditions, the journey typically takes 20 to 40 minutes.

Duration of Visit

Allow 2 to 3 hours to walk along the banks and observe the activities near the temple complex. This provides sufficient time to navigate the area without rushing.

When to Visit

The riverbanks are most active during the morning and late afternoon. During major Hindu festivals, the area becomes very crowded with pilgrims and devotees. The dry season, from October to March, is generally the most stable time for visiting to avoid monsoon rains.
