Overview

Changu Narayan Temple is a historic Hindu complex dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located on a hilltop in Changu village. Dating back to the 4th century, it is recognized as one of the oldest Hindu temples in Nepal and holds UNESCO World Heritage status. Visitors go to study its traditional pagoda architecture, historic woodcarvings, and some of the earliest stone sculptures and inscriptions in the Kathmandu Valley.

Getting There

Located northeast of Lalitpur and Kathmandu, the site is reachable by taxi or private vehicle in roughly 45 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic. Local buses and minibuses also connect towards Changu village from Bhaktapur or Ratna Park, though they take longer due to regular stops.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend 1 to 2 hours on site to walk through the central courtyard, view the surrounding stone sculptures, and visit the adjacent village area.

When to Visit

Morning and late afternoon provide moderate temperatures and clear light for viewing architectural details. October through April offers dry weather. The complex experiences large crowds during major Hindu festivals, whereas regular weekday mornings are generally uncrowded.
