Krishna Mandir

Overview

Krishna Mandir is a 17th-century Hindu temple built in the stone shikhara style, situated within Patan Durbar Square in Lalitpur. Unlike many timber-and-brick Newar structures, it is constructed of carved stone. Visitors come to inspect the detailed narrative carvings on its pillars and lintels depicting scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Restored after earthquake damage in 2015, the facade can be observed up close from the public square.

Getting There

From central Lalitpur, the square is accessible on foot or by taxi within 5 to 10 minutes. From central Kathmandu, taxis take roughly 20 to 45 minutes depending on city traffic.

Time to Spend

Allow 20 to 30 minutes to inspect the stone carvings and architectural details from ground level.

When to Visit

Mornings and late afternoons offer cooler temperatures and softer lighting for viewing the facade. The square becomes crowded at midday and on weekends. Heavy crowding occurs during the annual Krishna Janmashtami festival.
