Understanding the City Layout

Liège is defined by the Meuse River and its steep valley slopes. The historical core gathers around Place Saint-Lambert and runs east through the pedestrian streets of Féronstrée. Just south of this historic spine is Le Carré, a compact grid filled with bars and eateries. East across the Meuse sits Outremeuse, an older island neighborhood with a slower, residential pace. The high-speed rail hub, Liège-Guillemins, is located well south of the old town.

Arriving and Getting Around

From Brussels Airport (BRU), take the train to Liège-Guillemins, either on a direct service or via an easy transfer at Leuven. Inside Liège, most central points are reachable on foot. To travel between Liège-Guillemins and the old town, take a local TEC bus or catch a frequent domestic train to Liège-Saint-Lambert station.

Common First-Timer Mistakes

  • Assuming Guillemins is central: Liège-Guillemins is not in the historic center. Plan on a short bus ride, local train connection, or a long walk to reach your lodging.
  • Attempting to drive Le Carré: Streets here are narrow, paved for pedestrians, and tightly regulated. Stay on foot.
  • Misjudging the Citadel ascent: The Montagne de Bueren staircase is steep. Wear flat shoes and take pauses on the way up.

A Sensible First-Visit Plan

Start with the historic center around Place Saint-Lambert, followed by the climb up Montagne de Bueren for valley views. In the evening, explore the dining streets of Le Carré. Leave the riverside gardens at La Boverie and the quiet lanes of Outremeuse for your following day.
