Overview

Built in 1200 on King's Island by the River Shannon, King John's Castle is a 13th-century fortress with surviving walls and towers. Visitors come to see medieval military architecture, view archaeological excavations, and learn about Limerick's history through museum exhibitions.

Getting There

The site is on King's Island, a 10- to 15-minute walk north from Limerick city centre. For air travel, Shannon Airport (SNN) serves the region.

Time to Spend

Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to tour the indoor exhibition galleries, explore the courtyard, and view the river from the tower battlements.

When to Visit

Mornings are generally less crowded before tour groups arrive. Summer is the busiest season. Because parts of the complex are outdoors and exposed, bring weather-appropriate clothing on rainy or windy days.
