Amphitheater of Lyon

This site contains the remains of an ancient Roman amphitheater. It served as a central gathering point where sixty Gallic tribes met to worship Rome and Augustus. Visitors go here to see the archaeological foundations of the Roman era and explore a site designated as a historic monument in 1961.

Getting There

The site is located on the Fourvière hill. From the city centre, you can reach it via the funicular (Funiculaire de Fourvière) or by bus. The journey typically takes 15 to 20 minutes depending on the mode of transport and walking distance from the stop.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk through the ruins and observe the layout of the ancient structure.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors, so it is most accessible during the spring and autumn. To avoid the midday sun and larger groups of tourists, visiting in the early morning is recommended. It can get crowded during peak summer travel months.
