Sanctuary of the Three Gauls

The Sanctuary of the Three Gauls

This site is an ancient Roman religious complex established in the late 1st century BC during the reign of Emperor Augustus. It served as a federal sanctuary designed to unify the three Gallic provinces under Roman rule. Travelers visit this location to see the archaeological remains and understand the political and religious administration of Roman Gaul.

Getting There

The sanctuary is located on the Fourvière hill. From the city centre, you can reach the site via the funicular (Funiculaire de Fourvière) or by bus. The journey typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes depending on the mode of transport and walking distance from the stop.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to explore the ruins and read the informational signage provided on-site.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors, so visiting during the spring or autumn avoids the peak summer heat. Morning visits are generally quieter. Like many historical sites in Lyon, it can become crowded during peak tourist seasons.
